2012 Lowell World Cup

Brought to you by the International Institute of New England

Formerly the One Lowell World Cup

On Saturday, August 4th, the International Institute of New England hosted the 2012 Lowell World Cup at Cawley Stadium in Lowell. Twelve local teams competed in the sweltering heat, representing Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Jamaica, USA, Portugal, Mexico, Honduras, Ireland, Argentina and Uganda. Families and friends came to watch back-to-back games of competitive soccer and cheer on their favorite teams. In the end, after eleven hours of competition under the scorching sun, the weather turned stormy and Brazil and Canada came out as co-champions of the 2012 Lowell World Cup. Earlier, Portugal and Ireland battled it out in the penalty kick shootout for third place, with Portugal edging out Ireland for the third place trophy.

Roman Cruz was also a winner when his name was drawn for the amazing door prize, donated by the New England Revolution Charitable Foundation: 4 club tickets and pregame field visits for a Revolution game! Kids were busy, too, with fun activities throughout the day and exciting youth soccer games in the afternoon. The day also featured the popular Penalty Kick Challenge for Kids, sponsored by BJ’s Wholesale Club, which gave kids a chance to shoot on a Revs Academy goalie. Congratulations to local players Galen Lewis, Joselito Lopez and Will Brown, who won first, second and third place, respectively.

Throughout the day, everyone enjoyed delicious food from local vendors Delicias Paisas and Big Daddy’s Pizza and More, as well as refreshing juices from a graduate of the International Institute’s microenterprise program, Magbe Savane of Makomas juices. We were also excited to see a reporter from the Lowell Sun at the tournament, which ran this great article afterwards. Overall, it was a day for bringing together the diverse communities of greater Lowell through a shared love of soccer. We hope that all the players, coaches and spectators enjoyed the event as much as we did. And special thanks to all our sponsors and volunteers! Without their support, this event would never have happened. The proceeds from this event directly support the Institute’s youth and education programming and services for new Americans in Lowell and all around New England.
